The slight tang of sourdough bread pairs beautifully with the warmth of cinnamon, vanilla, and a hint of sweetness. Whether you enjoy it classic with maple syrup or savory with eggs and avocado, this recipe is easy to make and perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices sourdough bread (preferably day-old, thick-cut)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk (or dairy-free alternative)
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for cooking)

Instructions

  • Prepare the egg mixture – In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until fully combined.
  • Soak the sourdough bread – Place each slice into the egg mixture, letting it soak for 1-2 minutes per side until fully coated but not oversaturated.
  • Heat the skillet – Melt butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat until sizzling.
  • Cook the French toast – Place soaked bread slices in the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.

  • Serve immediately – Top with maple syrup, fresh fruit, or your favorite toppings, and enjoy!

Notes

  • For crispier toast, use slightly stale sourdough bread or lightly toast fresh slices before soaking.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute milk with almond, oat, or coconut milk, and use coconut oil instead of butter.
  • To keep cooked slices warm, place them on a wire rack in a 200°F oven while cooking the rest.

  • Leftovers? Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
